This is a pretty sad photo. All the young cats are outside and Jasper spends the morning alone. If Hodge were here, he’d be sleeping on the same bed and Jasper would sleep like a rock. As it is, he awakes every half hour and demands reassurance.
At first it seemed that the rest of the cats were stepping up to take care of the big guy but the draw of enjoying the crisp fall air is too strong. Even Sneakers, who is no spring chicken, stays out until he can’t take anymore and then comes in to crash under the bed. Jasper takes no comfort from that.
Maybe it will be better in the winter, when everyone says inside. Jasper will have more company. Whether or not he will ever adjust to not having Hodge is around is another thing. Most cats adjust well to change and their memories are fickle. But Jasper is different and I suspect that he will be like us, seeing Hodge around every corner and aching to hear his voice.
