A Dark Winter Begats the Need for a Dark Brew

A Dark Winter Begats the Need for a Dark Brew

This is the beer I poured Sunday night for an evening of the increasingly wretched Downton Abbey and the marvelous Sherlock. There is something magical about the beer style known as porter. Not as heavy as a stout but still plenty of that dark-roasted malt character and bracing enough for a winter night. It goes without saying it is also perfect for watching British TV shows.

My two favorite porters are Bells Porter and Deschutes Black Butte Porter. The Bells has a more roasted character while the Deschutes has a little more hop presence but both are complex, balanced, and full of nuance. And if Downton Abbey continues its descent into recycled plots and further mediocrity I might have to up my Sunday night intake.

  1. I’m not a regular over at D.A. I saw the first season and enjoyed it, but somehow never went back for more. The beer looks tasty enough to just settle in and let them play it out. (Nice photo.) Sip, sip in front of the TV on a cold winter night and enjoy.
