Memorial Day, USA

Emil at attention 001For Memorial Day, here’s a photo of my late father-in-law standing at attention at Fort Leonard Wood. This was taken before he shipped out to the Pacific. He rarely talked about his experiences there and when he did it was in self-deprecation. On his Bronze Star he said, “I only got that because I was the only one in the company stupid enough to volunteer.” He saw service in the Philippines and New Guinea, ending with being on the wrong end of an artillery fight with a couple Japanese artillery units. Only three men in his immediate unit survived and they all left the field in stretchers. He spent a year in the hospital but he carried the physical and mental scars forever. RIP Emil, here’s to your memory.
