We’ve been getting rain every few days since that first weekend in August. Note that the lawn is somewhat green instead of a crisp golden brown. I have even had to begin mowing on a weekly basis again. But it’s definitely too little too late. Note the closer photo of the lawn below and then transfer this effect to millions of acres of farmland. Yep, this year is a wash.
Now one could say that weather on the northern prairie is prone to extremes and what we saw this summer is within the norm. The trouble with that argument is that now there is no “norm”. We are seeing more extremes than what the semi-arid climate this part of the West used to see. As me and my farmer cousin say, “it’s almost as if the climate were changing”. We’re going to see more of this and that’s not a good thing.
